Open Engineering Design

Open source has flourished because software is "infinitely-reproducible".
Physical objects are not so easily reproduced but the information for making them is.

Opening the Source

The source code for protoforge is now available at the sourceforge.net project page.  If you are interested in helping to develop the code please send me an email with your sourceforge username and I'll be happy to add you as a developer.

Protoforge.org is itself a prototype for a full featured web application to help large groups collaborate in developing large scale systems.  I have been developing the code on my own up to this point because I felt it was easier to get my idea across with a working prototype than to go through the effort of convincing others that it was worth the effort of development.  I also have had very little time to work on it and did not want to feel rushed or obligated to meet any kind of schedule (which always seems to happen when groups of people get together to create something).  Protoforge itself does not have any scheduling tools built into it because in volunteer efforts for open systems schedules just don't make any sense at all.  Of course this has had the drawback that only my brain was available to get things this far.  There are no doubt much better ways to do things and the site could easily evolve into something completely different with the help of additional developers.  I hope that it does.
