Road Trip to Space

My AAS Portfolio

I want to give this blog a theme. The "clever" Road Trip to Space title was meant to be applied to my trip to France in summer 2006 to participate in the International Space University Summer Session Program. But like anything that requires my constant attention, I didn't keep up with it. There was really no purpose to it. It was supposed to run on high octane clever instead of content. Who wrote the business plan on that one?

Starting in mid-November at the American Astronautical Society National Conference in Houston, I will be the AAS Vice President-Education. It's good on a number of levels, especially for the SEDS members that I assist because some of the advising and programs that I run by myself can be institutionalized. That's great--more support for the students, which is the ultimate goal. I am not experienced or knowledgeable enough to provide them with any real help; they just mistake my enthusiasm for something useful.

Right, yes, theme, well then... I'm out of clever titles and want to recycle this one. I don't want to use Road Trip to Space as a personal blog. I keep a paper journal. And I'm boring. Anyway. Long story short: I'm already identifying projects and events that are--I hope--interesting to students. I'll also be repeating some other programs for students that I've been doing--rovers, CubeSats, mentors--through AAS. The concept of a road trip isn't limited to students, but to me, it seems the best fit. I'll use this place to write about what I'm doing through AAS for students. More probably, instead of writing about what I'm doing--I'm still boring--I can use this to identify opportunities for students.

In the meantime, I'm drafting my "portfolio" of what I want to do with AAS educational programs. If you happen to see this post, please have a look: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcxkr3t3_43gn95sh
