SEDSWiki categorization: 8 May 2008 Update
Posted at 04:57 on Thursday 8 May 2008
Back in November 2007, we started a drive to add categories to the articles on SEDSWiki. Why? There are many articles on SEDSWiki, and if they are not organized well the information is difficult to find. By adding a category tag to the articles, the MediaWiki software creates an index of the articles. This is useful because you can have two types of information organization in the wiki: (1) vertical, by categories; (2) horizontal, by linking between articles. (Perhaps there is a better way to describe this, but I have no training in database design.)
The page for managing the "categorization drive" is located on the SEDSWiki Project Page. As of 8 May 2008, the magic numbers for uncategorized pages are:
- Uncategorized pages:
10088 - Uncategorized images: 210
- Uncategorized templates:
19032 - Uncategorized categories: 20
How can you help? Go to the SEDSWiki Project Page, find the uncategorized articles -- they are listed there -- and add categories. Confused about how to do that? Leave a note on the discussion page -- see the discussion tab at the top of the project page -- and we will show you how. It is as simple as adding [[Category:CATEGORYNAME]] to a page. Easy.
It does not matter how much information is stored on SEDSWiki if it is not easy to access. Thanks for the help, all.
