SEDSWiki categorization: 13 May 2008 Update

The SEDSWiki Categorization Drive of 2008 is over. It's OK to have a few uncategorized categories, nearly impossible -- or at least impractical -- to categorize all of them.

  • Uncategorized pages: 0
  • Uncategorized images: 0 (previous: 80)
  • Uncategorized templates: 0
  • Uncategorized categories: 14 (previous: 20)

Thanks again for using SEDSWiki. It's a free and open service to anyone that wants to use it constructively.

The next step in improving the organization of SEDSWiki is to remove the orphaned pages, i.e., pages that are not linked to -- either by deletion (perhaps they are irrelevant and unused) or by creating links to them on relevant pages. Want to help? It's as easy as adding [[Links]]. If you can help, please go to the SEDSWiki project page.

OK, thanks to Pradeep, we've cleared a lot of the uncategorized pages, images, and templates on SEDSWiki...

Things are looking good. I think we can fix all of this particular disorganization -- and there is plenty other cleanup to follow -- by the end of May. SEDSWiki categorization: 8 May 2008 Update

Back in November 2007, we started a drive to add categories to the articles on SEDSWiki. Why? There are many articles on SEDSWiki, and if they are not organized well the information is difficult to find. By adding a category tag to the articles, the MediaWiki software creates an index of the articles. This is useful because you can have two types of information organization in the wiki: (1) vertical, by categories; (2) horizontal, by linking between articles. (Perhaps there is a better way to describe this, but I have no training in database design.)

The page for managing the "categorization drive" is located on the SEDSWiki Project Page. As of 8 May 2008, the magic numbers for uncategorized pages are:

  • Uncategorized pages: 100 88
  • Uncategorized images: 210
  • Uncategorized templates: 190 32
  • Uncategorized categories: 20

How can you help? Go to the SEDSWiki Project Page, find the uncategorized articles -- they are listed there -- and add categories. Confused about how to do that? Leave a note on the discussion page -- see the discussion tab at the top of the project page -- and we will show you how. It is as simple as adding [[Category:CATEGORYNAME]] to a page. Easy.

It does not matter how much information is stored on SEDSWiki if it is not easy to access. Thanks for the help, all.

India on the Wiki

Over the past one week, I've been adding stuff to SEDSWiki. The Education Directory has now the following entries from India -

  • Indian Institute of Astrophysics
  • Indian Institute of Science
  • Raman Research Institute
  • Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
  • Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology

These are specialised centres of research on astronomy and astrophysics here in India. The list is by no means complete. These organisations also maintain telescopes and observatories which I've added to the Places to Go section of the Space Information Archive.

They also churn out many papers everyday and these are available on the Wiki under the 'References' section.

The next step would be to add the Universities and IITs that offer courses in space science and engineering and then move down. Please note that these are not recommendations - just a directory of listings that we know.

If you're from any of the above mentioned organisations and feel that we've got something about your institution wrong, you are free to change it. Registration for the wiki is free and you're free to edit. Also, you're welcome to add information about institutions in your country. Let the world know. Link if possible.

Check out the Space Information Archive in the coming days for more updates!!

Cohetes and Euroversities

I think I've finally settled on the core formation of the Space Information Archive part of SEDSWiki:

That should be all of the movement and rearrangement for now. It more or less fits my mental image of a directory of things to do -- a very vague thing, but a focus on the functional things -- for the space-interested crowd.

Today's big update to the Education Directory: European universities added in Germany, Switzerland, and France. (Thank you, Cedric)

The most interesting thing I found today comes from a group in Argentina called Asociación de Cohetería Experimental y Modelista Argentina. They host an annual event called Cohetes de América, a three week event -- 1 October to 22 October -- for rocketeers all over America to launch their rockets and share their pictures and notes from their individual events. With all due respect to astronomers, this is much much cooler than a Messier marathon or international sidewalk astronomy event, simply due to the large amounts of smoke and fire. So, Cohetes de América 2007 has been added to the International section of the Events directory for October 2007. Buenos suerte, coheteros.
